What are ESD safety shoes?
ESD stands for Electrostatic Discharge. ESD safety shoes are shoes that control the build-up and discharge of static electricity by providing a controlled electrical resistance between the wearer and the floor. This allows static electricity to be gradually and safely dissipated without sudden discharges.
ESD safety shoes have an electrical resistance between 750 kΩ and 35 MΩ, a precisely defined range where the lower limit ensures that the wearer does not act as a conductor at high voltage, and the upper limit ensures effective dissipation of static electricity.
ESD safety shoes are certified according to the EN 61340-5-1 standard for ESD protection.
When are ESD safety shoes mandatory?
ESD safety shoes are mandatory in environments where electrostatic discharge can cause damage to electronic components or pose a danger to people. This is the case in the electronics industry and semiconductor manufacturing where even small discharges of a few volts can damage expensive components, in laboratories and research environments where sensitive equipment is used, in the pharmaceutical industry where electrostatic discharge can cause reactions, and in environments with flammable or explosive substances where sparks pose a danger.
The difference with anti-static safety shoes is crucial; ESD safety shoes have a lower electrical resistance and are intended for the most sensitive environments. Anti-static safety shoes are suitable for less sensitive environments where only the build-up of static electricity on the body needs to be prevented. Size advice for ESD safety shoes
Due to the protective toe cap and more robust construction, ESD safety shoes have slightly less room in the forefoot than regular shoes. Use your normal shoe size as a starting point and select the width size that matches the width of your foot. If in doubt, we recommend going up half a size. Do you have a wide foot?
