What are S2 safety shoes?
S2 safety shoes build upon the basic S1 class and add one additional requirement:
Water resistance of the upper, meaning the material of the shoe is resistant to water penetration, keeping feet dry when in contact with wet surfaces, puddles, or damp work floors.
All other S1 features remain applicable to S2: a protective toe cap resistant to an impact energy of at least 200 joules and a compression force of at least 15 kilonewtons, a closed heel cap, energy absorption in the heel, antistatic properties, and an oil-resistant sole.
S2 safety shoes are suitable for working environments where contact with damp surfaces or wet surfaces is possible, but where there is no risk of sharp objects on the floor, such as the food industry, cleaning, and outdoor working environments with wet but flat surfaces.
What is the difference between S1, S2, and S3?
The three safety classes build upon each other, and each includes all the features of the lower class:
- S1: the basic class with a protective toe cap, closed heel cap, energy absorption, antistatic properties, and an oil-resistant sole. Suitable for dry working environments.
- S2: all S1 features, supplemented with water resistance of the upper. Suitable for damp working environments.
- S3: all S2 features, supplemented with a penetration-resistant and profiled sole. Suitable for the toughest working environments with a risk of sharp objects and unpaved surfaces.
An S3 safety shoe can therefore always be used in environments where S2 is required, but not vice versa. S2 safety shoes do not offer protection against sharp objects on the floor.
When are S2 safety shoes the right choice?
S2 safety shoes are the right choice if your employer's risk assessment shows a risk of wet surfaces but not sharp objects on the floor. This is the case in the food industry, cleaning companies, horticulture, and outdoor working environments where the surface is wet but relatively flat and controlled.
Are you unsure if S2 is sufficient for your working environment? Always consult your employer's risk assessment or occupational health and safety legislation. In practice, many employers choose S3 as standard, even in environments where S2 would technically be sufficient, because S3 always offers more protection than needed, never less.

Size advice
Due to the protective toe cap and sturdier construction, safety shoes have slightly less room in the forefoot than regular shoes. Choose your normal shoe size as a starting point and select the width size that matches the width of your foot. If in doubt, we recommend half a size larger. Do you have wide feet? Then choose wide safety shoes in the wider width size.
